Big Brother Betting

The reality television show Big Brother features contestants, referred to as housemates, who live in isolation from the outside world in a custom-built house. The object is to avoid being evicted by the public with the ultimate winner taking home a large cash sum and this brings an array of angles for TV betting on the show. The show's name comes from the 1949 novel by George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Big Brother was hosted by Davina McCall when screened on Channel 4, but will now be hosted by former contestant Brian Dowling following the move to Channel 5.

On a weekly basis housemates visit the diary room, individually, and nominate two other housemates for eviction. The two or more housemates with the most eviction votes are announced to the house and the public. Thereafter, the public votes for who they wish to see evicted and the housemate who receives the most votes leaves.

In the last few years there have been some variations to this format. Some of the most common include, double evictions, where, particularly near the end of a series, two housemates with the most public votes may be evicted and if a housemate leaves voluntarily or is evicted for breaking the rules, he or she may be replaced.

Big Brother Housemate Tasks

The housemates are set tasks by Big Brother at regular intervals. These may include a project or specific job for just one housemate, which the others may or may not know about, or they could include tasks that all the housemates complete over several days. The reward for shorter tasks are normally "treats" such as alcohol or cigarettes. The completion of longer tasks determine the size of the house's weekly shopping budget. If tasks are failed, only basic rations are allocated to the housemates.

Tasks sometimes include a performance of some sort, or dressing up. A new innovation in the form of a separate programme was introduced to Series 3 of Big Brother. The "Big Brother Live Task" show required the housemates to perform a short task which could change the way they lived in the house. These live tasks again happened in Big Brother 4 and winners were treated to special rewards. In series 5 the size of the eventual prize was affected. £10,000 was deducted each time housemates failed a set task, however, this was discontinued shortly thereafter.
